Hey There — Welcome to ChickenStarter.com
I’m Oladepo Babatunde, founder of ChickenStarter and a backyard chicken keeper with over 6 years of hands-on experience raising flocks in tropical climates.
I’ve personally raised 50+ chickens across multiple breeds—from Buff Orpingtons and Australorps to heat-hardy local varieties—learning through every mistake, every lost hen, and every hard-won success.
ChickenStarter exists because when I started, I couldn’t find clear, practical answers that actually worked in hot, humid conditions. Most chicken-keeping advice targets temperate areas with mildly-hot summers and mildly-cold winters, leaving hot-climate keepers without guidance that actually applies to their situation. I built this site to fill that gap.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by conflicting chicken advice that doesn’t fit your reality, you’re in the right place.
My Journey: From Clueless to Coop-Savvy
I didn’t grow up on a farm. No family chicken mentor. I started for the same reasons you probably did: fresh eggs, a more sustainable lifestyle, and what seemed like a simple backyard project.
Then reality hit—hard.
Year one taught me expensive lessons:
I lost my first two hens to heat stress before I understood that proper coop ventilation in tropical climates requires far more airflow than standard recommendations suggest. The general rule of 1 square foot of ventilation per 10 square feet of floor space works in temperate climates, but experienced hot-climate keepers report needing double or triple that minimum just to keep coop temperatures manageable on 90°F+ days. In my experience, coops without deep natural shade need at least 1 square foot of ventilation per bird to prevent heat buildup—a lesson I learned after watching my hens pant with their wings spread, desperately trying to cool down.
I battled a severe mite infestation that spread to 12 birds before I developed the dust bath protocols I now recommend to every beginner. That outbreak taught me that prevention through regular dust bathing beats treatment every time.
I wasted significant money on commercial feeds before learning to formulate balanced rations that cut my costs by 30% while actually improving egg production. The key was understanding that laying hens need 16-18% protein and adequate calcium—not the one-size-fits-all commercial blends I’d been buying.
I dealt with egg-eating behavior that took three failed approaches before I found what actually works. Turns out, the problem wasn’t hunger or boredom—it was thin shells from inadequate calcium supplementation.
What changed everything: I started documenting every problem, every solution that worked, and every “expert tip” that failed in real-world tropical conditions. That documentation became ChickenStarter.
What Makes ChickenStarter Different
Most chicken-keeping advice online comes from one of two places: academic sources that lack practical application, or hobbyists in mild climates whose experience doesn’t transfer to challenging environments. Dry heat behaves differently than humid heat—misters and swamp coolers that work brilliantly in arid Arizona actually make things worse when humidity already sits at 90%.
ChickenStarter bridges that gap.
Every guide on this site is built from:
Direct experience—I’ve personally tested the methods I recommend, often multiple approaches before finding what works. When I write about treating respiratory infections, it’s because I’ve nursed sick birds back to health and learned which interventions matter.
Climate-specific insights—Solutions optimized for heat, humidity, and the unique challenges of tropical chicken keeping. In the tropics, chickens need protection from torrential rain, mud, and intense heat simultaneously—and fully enclosed coops simply don’t work because temperatures climb too high.
Beginner-first explanations—Written by someone who remembers exactly how confusing this felt at the start. I don’t assume you know what “crop impaction” means or why ventilation placement matters more than ventilation size.
I’ve helped hundreds of first-time chicken keepers through direct email support, answering questions about everything from pasty butt in chicks to predator-proofing on a budget.

Why You Can Trust This Site
What I commit to:
Every guide reflects real experience—methods I’ve tested personally or verified through trusted sources. When I recommend a product, I’ve either used it myself or thoroughly researched its effectiveness through multiple independent reviews.
I update content as my knowledge grows and best practices evolve. Chicken keeping isn’t static—new research emerges, better products become available, and my own flock teaches me something new every season.
I clearly state when information varies by location. Chicken laws differ by state in the US, regulations vary across Australia, and product availability changes by country. When these differences matter, I say so.
What I don’t claim:
I’m not a veterinarian. ChickenStarter provides educational information, not medical advice. For serious health issues—severe lethargy, breathing distress, sudden death, major injuries—I always recommend consulting a qualified poultry vet.
When I reference nutrition data, disease information, or regulations, I rely on reputable agricultural extension sources and established veterinary guidance—then clearly note when guidance may have changed.
My research process: For topics outside my direct experience, I cross-reference agricultural extension resources, peer-reviewed poultry science, and established veterinary guidance—then translate that information into practical, actionable advice that actually works in backyard conditions.
Who ChickenStarter Serves
This site is specifically designed for:
Total beginners raising chickens for the first time who need step-by-step guidance without judgment. I remember feeling overwhelmed by terminology, conflicting advice, and the fear of doing something wrong. Every guide assumes you’re starting from zero.
Warm-climate keepers where heat management, humidity control, and tropical disease prevention matter. Chickens’ bodies perform best below about 75°F; above 90°F they experience significant heat stress. If your summers regularly exceed these temperatures, you need different strategies than keepers in Vermont or Scotland.
Budget-conscious hobbyists who want practical solutions without expensive equipment. You don’t need a $500 automatic coop door or premium organic feed to raise healthy chickens. I’ll show you how to build a functional coop for under $200 and which corners you can cut without compromising your flock’s welfare.
Small-scale farmers (particularly in Nigeria) building sustainable poultry operations. I cover layer farming business planning, broiler production, and the practical economics of choosing between layers, broilers, and noilers.
I’m based in Nigeria and write from that lived experience—while also covering topics specifically relevant to keepers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. When laws, products, or recommendations vary by location, I say so clearly.
