My Journey: From Clueless to Coop-Savvy

I didn’t grow up on a farm. No family chicken mentor. I started for the same reasons you probably did: fresh eggs, a more sustainable lifestyle, and what seemed like a simple backyard project.

Then reality hit—hard.

Year one taught me expensive lessons:

I lost my first two hens to heat stress before I understood that proper coop ventilation in tropical climates requires far more airflow than standard recommendations suggest. The general rule of 1 square foot of ventilation per 10 square feet of floor space works in temperate climates, but experienced hot-climate keepers report needing double or triple that minimum just to keep coop temperatures manageable on 90°F+ days. In my experience, coops without deep natural shade need at least 1 square foot of ventilation per bird to prevent heat buildup—a lesson I learned after watching my hens pant with their wings spread, desperately trying to cool down.
